July 12th
SAINTS LOUIS MARTIN AND ZELIE GUERIN
(Parents of St. Therese of the Child Jesus.)

From the letters of Zelie Martin ......

When I closed the eyes of my dear little children and buried them, I really felt the pain. It is a pain to which I have always been resigned. I do not regret the pains and the anxieties I have had to endure on their account. Many people have said to me : " It would have been better if you had never had them." I cannot tolerate these words. The pains and anxieties of this life cannot be compared to the eternal happiness of my children. After all they have not been lost forever, life is short and full of suffering, we shall find them in heaven.

(Zelie and Louis had 9 children of whom 4 died in infancy and 5 became Nuns.)

SALVATION PLAN OF GOD
(Part 1)
To share in his great love God created man.
Gave him the earth and fixed his life span.
How sin entered in and then destroyed God’s plan!!
Oh Merciful Father, how shall we reach thee,
How shall we reach thee (2)
Oh Merciful Father, how shall we reach thee.

Now the hearts of all people were going astray,
Their doom was eternal, and no other way.
The whole of creation, not one who could stay!!
Oh save us dear Father, we call upon thee,
We call upon thee (2)
Oh save us dear Father, we call upon thee.

Abraham, Isaac lived in the fear of the Lord,
And Moses was blessed to hear the voice of the Lord,
He cried out, “Obey the commands of the Lord.”
Oh Father of Jacob, how can we thank thee,
How can we thank thee (2)
Oh Father of Jacob, how can we thank thee.

They cried out to God in their misery,
In His great mercy, he heard their plea.
He sent them great prophets to set them all free!!
Oh Wonderful Father, we bow before thee,
We bow before thee (2)
Oh Wonderful Father, we bow before thee.

MISSIONARIES INDEED!

“Go and preach” was the Saviour’s command
"The Good News to all mankind….”
‘twas a mission to the chosen band
That through thick and thin with Him would stand.

Do Carmelites seem oblivious of this
Living secure in their enclosed bliss?
Is their missionary zeal nearly a wish?
No, Never!  Let’s not take it amiss.

Their silence in order to listen, to Love,
In total attention to the message from above,
Inter-mingling their wills with His, they bow
To His commands – obedience they vow.

Displayed in the ‘desert’ is their charity
True loving in their concern for authenticity
Honest with self, with others, with God in piety
Preaching through practice the divine amiability.

Spiritual companionship, openness of heart
Burning love for the entire creation – a good start
The knowledge and love of the Saviour to impart
Imbued by the Spirit – the Architect of love’s art.

On the cross at Calvary,
Jesus died for you and me.
Bore the sins of humankind,
God’s great mercy thrills my mind.

Christ You hang, arms open wide
Mercy streams flow from Your side,
To cure the sick, give sight to blind,
Blot out the sins of all mankind.

Jesus Lord and Master of all,
You pick us up each time we fall.
No more shall we Your love offend
To us Your wounded hands extend.

Shield us in thy loving embrace,
And fill us with your heavenly grace.
For  us, the wounds You endured
By which all our wounds are cured.

On the heights of Calvary
In the depths of misery
By the cross Your Mother stood
Amidst hearts harder than wood.

“Father, forgive them, You prayed,
While You were by insults sprayed.
“They do not know what they do,”
Infinite Mercy, thanks to You.

Before Thy Face
As I gaze on your face divine
So full of sweet compassion
Your thorn crowned head bent in love
To speak words of pardon for my sin.
Your arms are stretched out to embrace
With treasures of love and confidence.

The sacred feet and hands are nailed
Which once went about doing good.
Healing the sick, blessing the children
Nailed to the cross and covered with Blood.
From the crown of your sacred head
To the sole of your feet gushing blood.

Jesus crucified our redemption
The ladder that leads us to heaven
The living memorial of your love
Abba father’s gift from above.
May we carry our cross lovingly
Follow in your footsteps steadfastly.

When we delight in our sins and vices
We take part in crucifying Jesus
But if we love Jesus with all our heart
And love every one with tender heart
On our death bed he will say words of love
Today you will be with me in paradise.

The master strolling along,
Picked up a grain of wheat,
From the bag kept ready for sowing.
He looked at it, rubbed it clean, kissed it and pressed it to his heart.
The grain of wheat was thrilled, was overjoyed.
Close to the master’s heart it remained,
Like a precious pearl, a gem, a jewel now still more precious.
The grain of wheat began to dream dreams, lofty dreams.
It saw itself set in a precious pendent,
Lovely, beautiful shining bright Oh so very beautiful,
And in ecstatic exuberance it exclaimed
“I was born for You, I am Yours, What is your plan for me.”
Delighted in its glory it looked up at the sky –
A little twinkling star grew big and bright –
It looked down at the little grain of wheat  and said
“ Many a gem is born to bloom and blush
and waste its sweetness in the night air”
The star twinkled a mischievous smile
            Left its mark and disappeared.
The little grain of wheat kept repeating
Many a flower is born to bloom and blush
and waste its sweetness in the night air”
Till one fine day it stopped looking at the sky
You stupid, that’s not meant for you,
You are not a flower  you are a grain of wheat”
The little grain of wheat went back to its musing.
The master took the little grain of wheat looked at it and kissed it,
Then he went out into the garden,
Dug a little hole and dropped the little grain of wheat.
The little grain cried out Oh Master what have you done to me?
It hurts  Oh Oh Oh my master My body is paining.
My master I love you and I know you love me too ,
I am yours , I was born for you Do with me as you wish.
The grain of wheat looked around. All the same it could not help feeling the pain.
And oh! It was smelly, dirty and dark. Oh master it cried out.
My master where are you? And the little grain of wheat wept.
It wept and wept and wept till it fell asleep
It woke up to a splitting pain on its side,
And looked at itself and saw a lovely shoot sprouting up,
As  beautiful as the wings of an angel, Oh so very delicate and beautiful.
And down below fine lovely roots  My! how very lovely, dainty how delicate.
Oh what beauty, I never knew these were in me Yes I had to die to know,
To know that unless a grain of wheat falls to the ground,
It remains but a grain of wheat, but if it dies it will yield a rich harvest.
Content now; the dried up skin of the grain of wheat dreamed once more,
A field of Wheat stocks dancing in the wind, is winnowed and crushed.
Into flour and baked to make Hosts  --  Hosts ---  the Body of Christ
And it said to itself Now I know why I was born----
Yes I was born to become the Body of Christ

THE OVERFLOW OF DIVINE MERCY IN MY LIFE

“I know the plans I have for you. The plans to bring you prosperity and not disaster, the plans to bring about the life you hope for” says the Lord God” (Jeremiah 29:11).
All my life I have been experiencing the words of God and I believe that my vocation was a fulfillment of God’s plan. When I look back I feel the strong   hands of God which were holding me all these years in my happiness and sorrows distress and loneliness, protecting me  from all the pleasures of the world and have brought me to this ‘Heaven on Earth’, House of God, and the Order of our most dear heavenly Mother. I was attached to Blessed Mother from my childhood and Retreat center, Chittoor in Ernakulum has played a great role in it. Attending the retreats and prayer services there has changed me into a new person and a child of God.
I firmly believe that it was because of God’s great mercy I could experience His love and be blessed to be in this Carmel and dedicate my whole life to Him, who loves me most. It was my great sins which made God show His eyes of mercy on me as Jesus says “I came to call not the upright, but sinners”( Mark 2:17), He came to save me and made me totally His.
The first incident in my memory, when I dedicated my life to Christ was during a Christeen Retreat. But later after many years I didn’t know how to fulfill this promise and at sometimes I regretted because I felt myself a great sinner unworthy to become the bride of Christ and tried to move along the flow of the world. But now, I believe that it was Holy Spirit who inspired me to take this decision to join Carmel and it was not by my own will alone. God has brought me to fulfill His tasks with a great thirst in my soul to serve Him. I would like to proclaim from my experience that I am completely the daughter of God’s Divine Mercy and He has brought me to this Carmel in the Year of Mercy to prove it to me.
The first idea of a cloistered life came to me when I read the autobiography of St.Therese of Lisieux, when I was in 9th grade she influenced me so much. This was the same year when our Carmel began construction , which I feel now as the great work of the Lord. The little way of St. Therese influenced me so much and God inspired me to follow it little by little through the people chosen by God, especially my parents and priest who had great devotion to Little Flower. My mother used to remind me to offer all my little pains and sufferings for the souls in purgatory and my father used to advice me to read spiritual books and write letter to Jesus. The life of my parents and their zeal towards God was also a great inspiration to receive this vocation. But when I shared my wish to my mother join a cloister, first she discouraged me, which made me confused. So I thought I would become a doctor and serve God by serving people. God’s plans were entirely different and that is how I learned B.Tech during which I passed through failures, sufferings, loneliness which was also God’s plan to purify me. During the times of troubles I always found my comfort in Jesus with whom I shared everything and through these conversations I could come in more close relationship with Him. In my distress I felt great comfort by the voice of God speaking me through the book named “He & I”of Gabrieli Bosis, a French author.
It was during the final year of B.Tech my mind became so much disturbed and had a feeling that God was calling me. Then I started praying more earnestly to know God’s plan. For this I attended a vocation retreat at Sehion Retreat Centre in Kerala near Palakad which helped me in my discernment. I could confirm my vocation and God left in me a small spark of His love. Even if I had great temptations and discouragements, God gave me the strength to stand firm in my decision and He strengthened me through the word of God. I told my parents my old dream of joining the Carmel and now they blessed me to follow God’s call since they understood that my decision was strong and final.
Today, my Lord, from His great mercy has chosen me and given this special call to be always closer to Him and inviting me to come in union with Him. The devotion to Blessed Virgin Mary has brought me closer to the real Love - JESUS CHRIST.
